Message from Head of the Department

Prof. Sunil Kr. Singla

It gives me immense pride and pleasure to introduce the Department of Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering. It is one of the oldest departments (established in 1956) in the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, located in Patiala (a princely state of Punjab). There are approximately 1200 students in total enrolled in various academic programs (UG, PG, and Ph.D.).

The department offers four bachelor’s degree programs: Electrical Engineering, Electronics (Instrumentation and Control) Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Electrical & Computer Engineering. The undergraduate program in Biomedical Engineering is an international engineering program in collaboration with the University of Toledo, USA. The students under the 2+2 program will get a degree from the University of Toledo. Our program graduates benefit from hands-on experiences from Co-operatives (Co-Op) to senior design projects.

In addition, the department offers a postgraduate program, M.E. Power Systems, and Ph.D. programs in various specializations of Electrical Engineering, Electronics (Instrumentation and Control) Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. Among the multiple research areas, faculty members work in Power System Operation and Optimisation, Power Converters & Renewable Energy, Electric Vehicles, System & Control Engineering, Biomedical Instrumentation, Signal Processing, and Optical Networks. Our students of all UG and PG programs are offered several merit scholarships as per institute norms.

Our department has a consistent placement and internship record for all the UG and PG programs. The final-year UG engineering students of the above-mentioned programs spend an entire six-month internship in the industry in their final semester, known as project semester, completing an industrial project under the joint supervision of industry supervisors and institute faculty mentors.

Our vision is to be a leading establishment excelling in higher education and research in Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering to meet the aspirations of the global community. We provide a very informal atmosphere between faculty and students. Faculty members of our department are engaged in teaching and research.

I appreciate your concern in our department and would encourage you to stay in touch with us if you have any questions or suggestions.
