Biography

N.K. VERMA is Visiting Professor in School of Physics and Materials Science. He joined Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology in 1970. During his tenure, he has been raised to the level of Senior Professor of Physics. He has also served the Institute as Dean Students Affairs, Registrar, and Head of School of Physics and Materials Science in Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology. With over four decades of experience in teaching and research, Dr. Verma has taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has supervised 16 PhD students and published/presented over 300 research papers in journals and conference proceedings. Professor Verma has worked on large number of government sponsored research projects and presented his research work in US, UK, Singapore, UAE, and Thailand. He is also the recipient of the best paper award from the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE). Two of his research papers have also been adjudged key papers in the World Literature by The Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) USA and included in the Milestone series. His research interest includes Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Dr. Verma has also been member of Institute’s Senate, Board of Governors, Staff Affairs Committee, Finance Committee, Planning and Monitoring Board as well as Council. He has been quite active even in Institute Alumni Association and served it as Secretary, Vice President as well as Professor-in-charge, Alumni Relations Office.

Various nanostructured multifunctional Multiferroics of BiFeO3 doped with Gd, Dy and Tb have been synthesized and their Multiferroics properties viz., Electric, Magnetic and Magnetodielectric coupling measured.
First time nanowires with doping of rare earth metals of BiFeO3 have been reported.

Calcium ferrite nanoparticles and potassium ferrite nanoparticles along with their respective nanocomposites with silica and polyethylene glycol have been investigated as novel, superparamagnetic and biocompatible materials for biomedical applications. Altogether, six combinations (bare CaFe2O4 NPs, PEG/CaFe2O4 NPs, silica/CaFe2O4 NPs, bare KFeO2 NPs, PEG/KFeO2 NPs, silica/KFeO2 NPs) have been studied. Their structural, morphological, compositional and magnetic analyses have been done by X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), Scanning electron microscope/Transmission electron microscope (SEM/TEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDAX) and Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. Thermal (TGA/DTA) as well as FTIR analyses have also been carried out. In vitro cytotoxicity test on T cell lines (Jurkat cells), using 3-(4, 5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay have been performed in order to investigate their dose-dependent cytotoxicity.

Highly reflecting coatings have been developed using ZnS nanoparticles capped with thioglycerol and TiO2 nanoparticles having rutile-phase. Coating materials have been prepared using the nanoparticles by optimizing various parameters. Reflectors have been developed by applying these coating materials separately to aluminium and plastic substrates with different coating thicknesses and different pigment to binder ratio. The developed reflectors find use in almost every situation and area wherever illumination is required.
