RESEARCH INTERESTS AND HIGHLIGHTS

  1. Worked on effect of herbicides on cyanobacteria that forms an integral part of rice cultivation and their plasmid profiles. During post doctoral work cell cycle mutants and plasmid biology of coryneform bacteria was studied and a new shuttle vector for gene cloning in coryneform bacteria (Brevibacterium, Corynebacterium) was developed.
  2. Industrial plantations of pulp wood tree species Eucalyptus and Acacia in 1997-1999 in Orissa and Punjab, India were raised involving application of microbial inoculants and fly ash for soil amendment to improve productivity on degraded lands and rehabilitation of lime sludge dumped sites and developed package of practices for utilization of fly ash as a resource material.
  3. Developed and used microbial systems in bioremediation for their beneficial application in soil for improving soil fertility and crop productivity on degraded lands involving molecular markers to assess their survival and studying soil-plant-microbe interaction, metal remediation from industrial effluents, pyrene (PAH) biodegradation and dye decolourization and degradation using bacterial systems. Developed cost effective protocols for mass production of microbial inoculants (nitrogen fixer and phosphate solubilizer), green alga Dunaliella for *-carotene and Spirulina for SCP.
  4. Developed innovative approaches for utilization of industrial solid wastes such as fly ash and bio-wastes for meaningful purposes especially as soil ameliorants and metal biosorbent for clean up of metal containing industrial effluents. An invention was made related to a process for manufacturing biosorbent from waste microbial biomass from pharmaceutical industry, which is cost effective and environment friendly and has usage/utility for the removal of chromium from chromium (VI) containing solutions or chrome effluent or any other such effluent to a significant level, obviating the use of a chemical process.
  5. The prime focus has been from lab. to land/market approach which involved technology development, demonstration and dissemination and commercialization mainly of microbial processes through business incubation, mentoring and technical support and guidance

Transfer of technology and dissemination:

  1. Ballarpur Industries Ltd.: Technology demonstrated for utilization of flyash in forestry plantation on 30 acre of area with dose optimization (1997-2004) and its usage as a soil amendment agent which improves soil fertility and plant growth.
  2. Jagatjit Industries, Hamira: Soil analyses and flyash utilization: Flyash both dry and wet flyash generated at their unit was tested for various chemical properties and recommended for use at a certain percentage for their plantations through technology demonstration and implementation at their site for the purpose of proper disposal and utilization of flyash.
  3. Goetze India Pvt Ltd., Bahadurgarh: Treatment of chrome effluent, MoU Signed: The process of removal of hexavalent chromium from the chrome effluent was demonstrated in a 20 l column reactor at the site and the process was implemented using a biosorbent developed using industrial biowaste.
  4. Organic Farming: Field trials on 500 acre area for evaluation of algal biofertilizers in paddy cultivation. Blue green algal biofertilizers were manufactured and field tested for paddy cultivation and demonstrated on 500 acre of farmer’s field involving more than 50 different farmers in Patiala District in 2006-09. There was an increase in 10-15% yield and saving of urea application by 30 %. Similar trials using Nitrofix and Phosul (bacterial inoculants have been performed on nearly 1000 acre of land in different district of Patiala for building farmers confidence and market development.
